Call It Out Campaign

What is the “Call it Out” Campaign?

It is the next phase of the successful “Choose Respect” Campaign rolled out in the Nenagh Community in Dec 2022.

What do you want me to do?

Whenever you SEE or HEAR something inappropriate we are encouraging you to stand up and speak out.

We have highlighted 5 areas in particular where your positive action could make a significant difference:

  • Your school
  • Your sports club
  • Your workplace
  • On the street
  • Your group chat

By calling out inappropriate behaviour you will not only demonstrate positive support for the targeted individual but give strength to others to stand up when a similar incident arises in the future.

Give me examples of inappropriate behaviours.

  • Unwanted physical contact
  • Any form of sexual harassment or abuse, such as flashing or groping
  • Cat calling on the street
  • Racist commentary
  • Posting in a group chat or online - sexualized or bullying comments
  • Taking & sharing non consented photos or videos
  • Objectification of people – looks, clothes or interests
  • Inappropriate gestures
  • Stereotyping people - roles in society
  • (Online Safety) Line between curiosity & stalking on social media
  • initiation or hazing (where you're made to do humiliating things to be accepted)

What does an intervention look like?

  • Be direct and tell someone that their behaviour is not appropriate.
  • Intervention does not have to mean conflict. Sometimes it is enough to cause a distraction or just disrupt the current course of events.

NB: Only intervene if the situation is a safe environment.

Why should I be the one to intervene?

No doubt you have heard the expression “Somebody should do something”

Next time you hear or see something inappropriate let that “somebody” be YOU.

Choose Respect

What is the Choose Respect Project?

A Community Group in Nenagh is leading a pilot project to create awareness of the concerns facing women on a daily basis – primarily caused by men.

Are these concerns exclusive to Nenagh’s Community?

Absolutely not! Women face these issues in every community, every day, in Ireland.

What kind of concerns?

Comments on appearance, sexist banter and jokes, unwanted physical contact, cat-calling, sending unsolicited explicit images on your phone.
And sometimes worse…..

All men don't behave like this

It is true that the vast majority of men do not directly participate in these behaviours but……… all men can be part of the solution.

Ask yourself this

- Have you ever heard a comment or a joke within the circle of your friends that would easily fall into one of these examples?
- Ever received a text, image or video in your group chat that made you feel uncomfortable and you didn’t respond?
- Witnessed something on a night out but didn’t challenge a friend?

And that’s part of the problem.

You read it, you hear it or you see it – It doesn’t register as a problem.
“It’s a bit of craic – we were only joking”
Unless you start to recognise that these issues are REAL for women in our town, then nothing will change.

Still not convinced?

Why don’t you ask any woman you know, whether during the day or night, if she has:
• Taken a longer route home.
• Held her keys between her fingers.
• Made a fake phone call.
• Been catcalled.
• Received an unwanted image by text.
• Felt uncomfortable in public spaces.
• Been inappropriately touched on a night out.

What can I do?

1. Recognise that these issues are a reality for women in Nenagh’s community.
2. Accept personal responsibility to change your own behaviour.
3. And one more thing - you have a choice to make.

What is the choice?

Do you continue to remain as a passive bystander or do you step up and play an active role in challenging your friends, your work colleagues or even family members to recognise that this is a problem that we must eradicate for the betterment of our community.

What is a passive bystander?

Passive bystanders are people who choose, for whatever reason, to ignore the situation, or do nothing about it.
Active bystanders are people who do something to try and improve the situation.

What Is the Bystander Effect?

The term bystander effect refers to the phenomenon in which the greater the number of people present, the less likely people are to help a person in distress. In a series of classic studies researchers found that the amount of time it takes the participant to take action and seek help varies depending on how many other observers there are.

See examples in attached videos
https://youtu.be/Wy6eUTLzcU4
https://youtu.be/yT9xtrLLPFc
https://youtu.be/w8EtYRTTqlg
https://youtu.be/shuuTOMCKZ8

Bystander intervention?

Bystander Intervention is recognizing a potentially harmful situation or interaction and choosing to respond in a way that could positively influence the outcome.

What does an intervention look like?

- Be willing to speak up in difficult situations.
- Be direct and tell someone if their behaviour is out of line.
- Do not assume that just because no one else speaks up, that everyone else is fine with what is happening.
- If you step up and speak out, others will likely back you up.
- Be conscious of your use of language and choose words carefully.
- Be aware of, and refuse to use, sexist, homophobic, and demeaning language.
- Don’t joke about sexual assault; comments and jokes that are meant to “ease the tension” or are “just kidding around” can trivialize the severity of the behaviour.

Intervention does not have to mean conflict. Sometimes it is enough to cause a distraction or just disrupt the current course of events. Remember that it is never too early or too late to do something.

Use the bystander effect positively

Some psychologists believe that simply being aware of the bystander effect could make us all more likely to react.

After all — if we know it can happen, we might be more determined to make sure we aren’t the ones that stood by and let something horrible occur.

Why should I be the one to intervene?

You are part of this community and we encourage you to help your friends, colleagues and family members to identify unacceptable behaviour and call it out. If more of us don’t step up and speak out, we are part of the problem.

LASTLY……………..

The next time you identify inappropriate language or behaviour towards women in your group chat, in the corridors of your school, in your workplace, on a night out or in your sports club, don’t wait for someone else to intervene you know what to do.

STEP UP TO INTERVENTION

Your community is right behind you

Surgery in UL Hospital Nenagh occurs in two ‘new state of the art Theatres and Recovery’ which are in use since July 2014.  The new Sterile Services Department facilitates all our necessary set reprocessing requirements.  Our Surgical Day Ward is also revamped with 10 beds and 4 discharge bays.

We have visiting consultants performing day surgery Monday to Friday 8 - 5 pm.  Our specialities include: Urology, Orthopaedic, General, Vascular, Dental, Maxillo-Facial, Gynaecology and Dermatology.

Once achieving this we will be able to commence the National Cancer Screening Service Bowel Screen Programme.

We have a regional infusion service and drop in clinic for patients living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. It has been in operation for over 10 years. We look after over 1600 patients a year. The nurse led service is run by Niamh Hogan CNS and Dr Manus Moloney Consultant Gastroenterologist.

The Medical Area consists of a 21 Male Bedded Area, and a 28 Female Bedded Area with 3 Resident Consultant Physicians - Dr O’Malley, Dr Moloney and Dr Haq.  Support services are provided by a Multi-Disciplinary Team, i.e. Diabetic Services, Cardiac Services, Palliative Care & Physio Services and Multi Task Attendants. Our fundamental core values reflect a Holistic approach to nursing that provides Privacy, Freedom of Choice, Dignity and Independence a in a Clean and Safe Environment.

The End of Life Care Initiatives developed at Nenagh Hospital in conjunction with good practice, uses the End of Life symbol to add respect and solemnity to items used following the death of a person and to make resources relating to the end of life instantly identifiable.

For example:  An oak ward altar can be used in hospitals when a patient is dying or following their death. The top of the altar features the end of life spiral. Religious and cultural items relevant to end-of-life care can be stored inside. The principle of the family handover bag is to promote a dignified and sensitive way of returning the deceased patient’s personal belongings to the family. A family room at Nenagh Hospital has been made available for families who have a dying relative or are bereaved in the Hospital.

The end of life symbol can be explained as follows:

The three- stranded white spiral represents the interconnected cycle of birth, life and death .The white outer circle represents continuity, infinity and completion. Purple was the chosen colour as it is associated with nobility, solemnity and spirituality.

The symbol is normally displayed at a nurses’ station when a person has died or is dying and it is also used on a number of items associated with end of life care.

Our aim in Nenagh Hospital is to make the experience of dying as positive as it can be, both for those going through it and for those left behind.

Education in Nursing is ongoing in our Hospital, from hourly sessions to nurses going on to Postgraduate and Masters Level.

UL Hospital Nenagh – Infusion Centre Fundraising
A recent Christmas Sale in aid of the Infusion Centre at UL Hospital Nenagh has raised €1,685. Students from Teach an Leinn Adult Education Centre helped raise the funds through their mini company venture which was very successful. The funds will go towards continuing to provide group support workshops and individual one to one counselling for patients experiencing severe and debilitating Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

The Infusion Centre is aiming to provide a patient education day in the next few weeks for any patient accessing the infusion service including gastroenterology, dermatology and neurology patients.

The day will focus on healthy living mind and body. The aim is to bring speakers and use patient individual experiences. A dietician will speak on healthy eating and a fitness instructor will advise on getting fit after a relapse, while exploring the benefits of mindfulness techniques.

To date nearly €10,000 has been raised over the past 5 years through various charitable endeavours. This has been very beneficial to the unit but more importantly has inspired a new level of confidence and self esteem for the patients who have raised this money.

The Infusion Centre would like to say a huge thanks to all the hospital staff including catering and cleaning staff, LIU, MAU, Medical 1 and 2, endoscopy and the Surgical day ward, OPD, theatre and pre op assessment, x-ray, the laboratory, cardiology, physio, admissions office, secretaries, pharmacy, reception staff and bed managers.

Biodiversity Plan

Nenagh is an attractive and bustling county town in North Tipperary. Originally a market town, Nenagh (Aonach Urmhumhan) is situated on the banks of the Nenagh River, which connects the town with Lough Derg to the west.

The Town has a long history and a rich built heritage with the many fine buildings - Nenagh Castle (first decade of the 1200s), The Courthouse (1844), The Town Hall (1889), the Old Gaol (which now houses the Heritage Centre), St. Mary of the Rosary RC Church (1896), St. Mary’s Church of Ireland (1860) and much more. The many mature trees in and around the town, parks and public greenspaces, schools and sports grounds, as well as, the Nenagh River provide space for nature within the urban environment, and contribute to the town’s natural heritage.

Biodiversity Action Plans provide a framework for protecting, managing and/or enhancing natural heritage in the area through action led by the local community. The process of producing such a plan creates an opportunity to co-ordinate action among local groups, individuals, statutory bodies, and other organisations.

About Nenagh.ie

Welcome to Nenagh.ie

Our town, your voice - together our future is bright!

Our Mission
Nenagh Chamber of Commerce, Nenagh Town Council and AdSmart.ie have come together to form a coalition of growth and re-launch Nenagh.ie - a hyper-local website which will champion the town and its surrounding areas.

Nenagh.ie will offer a business listings service for the area, will work to promote community organisations and events and will be populated by compelling content which is relevant to the town and the surrounding hinterland. The Nenagh.ie team are determined to promote the best interests of Nenagh and the wonderful elements of a town which we are proud to call home. Nenagh.ie will also mount a significant social media campaign and will act as an advocate for the area.

Work Together
We need to support each other to get through these difficult times and the message behind Nenagh.ie is simple: if we are to transform our economy we must strive to create an atmosphere of possibility in Nenagh and give people the confidence to reach into their pockets. Ireland’s recovery from recession will not come down to who can cut what. It will come down to who can create.

Nenagh.ie will endeavour to highlight the fact that Nenagh is a town brimming with potential. Nenagh.ie will campaign on behalf of the area and it will fight for this town. Let’s carve out a future for ourselves and work to create the community that we want to live in. Nenagh Chamber of Commerce and Nenagh Town Council have already come together to work on the project, but only with the help of the community can it prove a success.

The Nenagh.ie project is funded by Nenagh Chamber of Commerce and Nenagh Town Council while Tom Ryan’s team at AdSmart.ie endeavour to bring their logistical and content delivery skills to ensure the project is a success.

About

Nenagh is truly a town for all seasons. There are not too many provincial Irish towns about which you can honestly say that a weekend isn’t nearly long enough, but Nenagh fits that bill!

Nenagh was originally a market town and its name in Irish (an tAonach/Aonach Urmhumhan) means “The Fair of Ormond” - a reference to the Ormond (East Munster) Fair. Nenagh is a thriving commercial town.

The Town

Nenagh CastleNenagh is the largest town in north Tipperary with an urban population of 7,995 and is part of the historical Barony of Ormond Lower which was the traditional territory of the O’Kennedy’s prior to the Norman invasion. This land was included in the grant made by King John of England to Theobald, eldest son of Hervey Walter of Lancashire, England. Theobald was subsequently appointed Chief Butler of Ireland. Nenagh Castle was built c1216 and was the main castle of the Butler family before they moved to Gowran, County Kilkenny in the 14th century.

Nenagh lies on the banks of the Nenagh River which empties into Lough Derg at Dromineer (nine kilometres to the north-west) which is a popular centre for sailing and water sports. The Silvermines Mountain range lies to the south of the town (highest peak Keeper Hill at 694 metres).

Access

Nenagh Town Centre

Nenagh is situated on the R445 regional road network which links it to the M7. The M7 by-passes the town to the south and provides high quality access to the cities of Limerick and Dublin. The N52 National Secondary Route to Birr (and through the Midlands to Dundalk) starts/terminates at Nenagh. This route also by-passes Nenagh to the north and connects with the M7 to the west of the town towards Limerick. Nenagh is connected to other main towns and cities by bus services. The main carriers are JJ Kavanagh & Sons (http://www.jjkavanagh.ie), Bus Éireann (http://www.buseireann.ie) and Bernard Kavanagh & Sons. Nenagh is also served by Irish Rail (http://www.irishrail.ie) - Nenagh Train Station sits on the main Limerick to Ballybrophy rail line. Passengers can connect at Ballybrophy with trains heading north-east to Dublin or south-west to Cork. Shannon Airport is located approximately one hour from Nenagh; Dublin Airport two and a half hours and Cork Airport approximately two hours.

Sport

Sport in NenaghSport and sporting organisations play a huge part in the lives of Nenagh and its surrounding areas. Indeed, three men (Johnny Hayes, Matt McGrath and Bob Tisdall) with Nenagh connections won Olympic gold medals. Bronze statues of these three Olympians have been erected in their honour in the grounds of the Nenagh Courthouse at Banba Square.

A Word from our Community Manager

Hello Nenagh.  I am thrilled to be here!

For those of you who have met me, you will know that I am a 'blow in'. I lived the first 10 years of my life in Italy after which my family moved to New York State where I grew up (in a large city by Niagara Falls), learned (earned a Master’s degree), and forged a career (my last job was as a Director at a college).
As it happens, I met an Irishman on my travels, and you can easily put together how I ended up here.  Lucky for me!

I have embraced Nenagh since my first trip, and when I finally moved here I set about contacting anyone who was involved in the betterment of our lovely town. My aim was to do anything possible to make our town centre thrive. My belief – backed up by some research – is that if the town centre thrives, we all reap the benefits. A robust local business sector has the effect of bolstering our town against the downturns of the national and world economy. Who wouldn't want that?

The Chamber of Commerce and Nenagh.ie were brazen enough to welcome me, the overly-enthusiastic stranger with bold plans, and to hear out my ideas. If I could figure out how, Nenagh would own the moon. That first Christmas I volunteered to help with events and ended up meeting nearly all the local merchants. That was one of the best and most interesting things I've done in my life. I fell in love with Nenagh and its people all the more.

So it was without hesitation that I accepted the position of Community Manager at Nenagh.ie.  They believe the same things I believe: Nenagh is a great town and the health of our local businesses is the key to everyone's prosperity. Nenagh.ie is the only website that congregates information about Nenagh so thoroughly. You can find a business, search for local deals, look for jobs, find out what's happening in and around town. All in one spot. And that's what I do. I scour around for information about Nenagh and share it with you. I also promote our businesses for all the reasons I mentioned above. We need them as much as they rely on us. This truth is deep in my heart.

If you have ideas for anything that you think will make an improvement to our website, FaceBook page, or Nenagh as a whole, please contact me.  I would love to hear from you. When like minds get together amazing things can happen!

If you are a business, do consider signing up and adding your voice to the only website dedicated to all that is Nenagh.

With much love to you, Nenagh,
Roberta
